Title |
Late early medieval cheekpiece |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper-alloy bridle fitting cheekpiece, it is late early medieval or Viking Age, c1000-1100, in date and similar cheekpieces are known from Westerfield, Claydon and Rattlesden, Suffolk. It measures 43.5mm in surviving length, one terminal end and arm of the cheekpiece is missing due to an old break. The complete terminal is lozenge shaped, 20mm by 19.5mm in size with rounded knops on three corners, it has a large oval shaped perforation, 11mm by 8.9mm in size. Beyond this complete terminal there is a rectangular arm, there is then a central zoomorphic moulding, which would have been in the centre of the mount originally, beyond it the other arm and terminal are missing. The central zoomorphic moulding measures 14.5mm in length and 15.9mm in width and appears to represent a forward facing animal head with small triangular pointed ears and a long nose, it resembles a fox. The front face of this cheekpiece is rounded and the back face flat. |
