Late Saxon buckle plate
Description
English: Incomplete Late Saxon trapezoidal buckle plate, worn and corroded with part of split attachment end (front part broken, back part missing), decorated with two possible skulls cast in high relief lying longitudinally jaw-to-jaw both with dots for eyes, the top of one skull is partly perforated by a broken circular hole for the pin where narrow end expands slightly. Stylistically similar finds are known from a number of sites including Postwick (HER 25984), Wendling (HER 40868), St Faith’s Lane, Norwich (forthcoming) and Fishergate, York (Rogers 1993) fig.652, no.5320. 9th century.
