Title
late Roman copper alloy buckle
Description
English: Late Roman copper alloy buckle, 25mm long and wide and 3mm thick. The buckle is in good condition, despite damage, has a green patina and weighs 4.79 grams. The buckle is D shaped and its curved part is made up of two stylised dolphins which are joined at the 'lips' as though kissing. Above these are two projecting horses heads with rather beak like muzzles, facing outwards. They have stamped circular eyes and a linear incision forming their mouths. The buckle is decorated with stamped circles forming the horses mane and has stamped semi-circles defining the horses face and creating a border where dolphin becomes horse. The dolphin has 'scales' formed of two lines of stamped semi-circles. The reverse is completely plain. The buckle has a circular sectioned pin bar which has a rounded protrusion in its inner centre. The buckle is a Hawkes and Dunning’s Type 1b (K. Leahy Pers comm.).
