Title
Late Roman buckle plate (front)
Description
English: An openwork plate from a late Roman copper-alloy buckle of Hawkes and Dunning (1961) Type IIA, with the corroded bolt which originally held the separate loop and tongue. The openwork motif, a rectangle with rounded ends, here repeated twice, is characteristic of the type (cf Hawkes and Dunning 1961, fig.17,g,h and fig.18,e), and the chamfered decoration of the edge and the surface ornament of dots and roundels also occur regularly (fig,17,a,e, and fig.18,e,i). There are holes at the corners, with traces of the attachment rivets in three of them.
