Title |
Late Roman buckle frame |
||
Description |
English: A copper-alloy late Roman buckle frame fragment of Hawkes and Dunning type 1a. This buckle fragment is similar to one found in Silchester and is most likely to be of Type 1a, which consists of a sub-oval or D-shaped loop and a straight hinge bar cast as one piece with the loop. The curved side is formed by the flattened bodies of a pair of confronted dolphins (Hawkes and Dunning 1961, 41-43, Fig 13, No f).
It is a fragment of the curved side of the buckle which survives, one head of a stylised dolphin survives, it has a high upstanding crest the front face of which is decorated with sloping vertical lines. A circular eye can be seen below the point where the crest terminates. The beginning of the confronting dolphins snout and circular eye also survives. It measures 23.6mm in surviving width and 18.6mm in surviving length. |
