Title
Late Roman buckle
Description
English: Copper alloy late Roman military buckle. The buckle has outward facing horse heads with clearly marked eyes, ears, and a hatched mane. The dolphin heads below on the frame have evolved into a series of moulded transverse ribs. The frame left and right of this is decorated with a section of repeated incised 'S' shapes followed by a double transverse line, followed by a section of repeated incised chevrons. The horses heads differ from the majority of finds from the Hawkes and Dunning type IB group, because the head is shown complete with the bridle straps. One runs from the top of the head to the mouth, and another at a right angle to this across the mouth.
