Title |
Late Roman – Early Medieval buckle |
||
Description |
English: A late Roman - Early Medieval copper alloy buckle (4th - early 5th century). It is similar to Hawkes and Dunning (1961: 59) Type IIIA. The buckle is a semi-circular loop that has a D-shaped cross-section and offset cross-bar. At the junctions between the frame and the cross-bar are two zoomorphic heads. The animal heads are depicted in profile with an engraved line for the mouth, punched dot for the eye and the ears laid back. Otherwise the frame is undecorated. The pin comprises a tapering strip of copper alloy that has been wrapped around the cross-bar for attachment. The frame has a corresponding rectangular notch to act as the pin rest. No buckle plate is present. Dark green patina.
Dimensions: length 26.97mm; width 34.34mm; thickness 5.63mm; weight 14.30g. |
