Title |
Late Medieval to early Post Medieval buckle |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy pin from an annular buckle or brooch, of late Medieval to Post Medieval dating (1200 - 1500 AD). The pin is sub rectangular in plan, and rectangular in cross section. The shank of the pin tapers to a blunt end. The head of the pin consisted of a cast circular loop, approximately 50% of the cast loop is now present, having being broken in antiquity. On the back of the pin, directly below the loop, is a semi circular depression. A small transverse ridge, extending partially down the length of the pin is present. This ridge has been decorated by a series of small grooves. The pin is a dark green colour, with an uneven broken patina. Minor abrasion has resulted in the patchy loss of the patina from predominately one side of the pin. In these areas, the surface of the pin is a lighter green colour. This pin is probably originally from an annular buckle, of Medieval date (1200 - 1500 AD), but it is possible that it could have originated from an annular brooch. However the robusticity of the pin would suggest a more utilitarian function such as a buckle. Several similar examples have been recorded on the PAS database including NCL-2B9D01, SWYOR-43F3B1and IOW-2B8B46.
It measures 48.6mm in length, 5.0mm wide and 7.6mm thick. It weighs 4.3 grams. |
