Title |
Late Medieval to Post Medieval: Locking buckle fragment |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper alloy fragment from a locking buckle of probable later medieval or early post medieval date (1450-1600). The fragment consists of a small sub-rectangular bar with a clear deliberate bend. One edge is broken; this damage is unpatinated and relatively recent. The other end terminates in a sub oval shaped knop, which is decorated with diagonal cast grooves. The bar itself is an irregular hexagonal shape in cross-section (with distinct faceted edges). The fragment is a mid green colour with a polished patina which coves all surfaces. In form and shape the bar is similar to those seen on purse bars of the period; however it is much smaller than these. It is more likely that this represents the locking arm of a buckle (cf Egan 2005 Material Culture in London in the Age of Transition pp 37-38 cat no. 116-117). These are dated to the 16th century.
The fragment measures 35.9mm long, 4.7mm maximum width across bar (6.8mm across ball terminal), is 3.3mm thick (5.6mm thick across ball terminal). It weighs 3.23 grams |
