Title
Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval: Buckle
Description
English:

A complete cast copper alloy single loop sub-rectangular buckle of Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval dating (c. 1500 AD to 1650 AD).

The buckle is sub rectangular in plan and irregular in cross section. It displays a rounded front edge, with a notch acting as a pin rest on the internal edge. The back of the buckle exhibits expanded, splayed feet at either end of a narrowed and recessed central bar. The pin is missing, probably lost in antiquity. The back of the buckle is plain and undecorated, although the front part of the buckle demonstrates bevelling towards the interior, almost forming a raised, re-enforced lip at the front edge of the buckle.

It measures 23.57mm in length, 22.60mm wide and 3.09mm thick. It weighs 2.8 grams.

The buckle frame is a dark green colour, with an even surface patina. Due to soil pressure, it now displays a small degree of diagonal warping, down the length of the buckle.

The buckle is similar to that published as #157 in Whitehead (2003), which has been dated to c.1500 to c. 1650 AD. Many examples of this style of buckle have been recorded on the PAS database including SUSS-A93834, LVPL-03FD90 and NMS-73BD05.
