Title |
Late Medieval iron circular buckle frame |
||
Description |
English: Circular wrought iron buckle frame and pin dating from c. 13th-15th century. Both frame and pin are very corroded and it does not look like the object had been plated with non-ferrous material. P Ottaway (for reference see below) suggests that "...it is often difficult to distinguish human dress buckles from equine harness buckles on the grounds of form and style, as the two types were fulfilling the same basic function in conjunction with leather strap." (Ottaway in Griffith, D. et al 2007, 188-9). He distinguishes the two types purely on the grounds of size where buckles having a diameter great than 50mm are treated as equine. Based on this suggestion, our buckle is probably a Medieval horse harness buckle rather than part of the Medieval costume. |
