Title |
Late Medieval Buckle |
||
Description |
English: Copper alloy Buckle. Cast oval single looped buckle with narrowed and offset strap bar, and with billeted decoration of the broad outer edge of the frame, which is also bevelled behind. An incised border is textured by finely rockered work which edges an incised line with tiny triangles, and similar techniques may provide a finely lined ground for the billeted decoration. The back of the buckle is mainly flat being bevelled only at its inner edge, and bears clear diagonal file marks overall. A cast and stepped pin is looped around the strap bar. The stepped effect resembles that of rabbeted armour buckles of later medieval date. Overall, the degree and quality of decoration is exceptional, as is its condition. Suggested date: Later Medieval, 1350-1500.
Length: 22.3mm, Height: 33.1mm, Thickness: 2.9mm, Weight: 5.26gms. |
