Title
Late Iron Age to early Roman Langton Down brooch
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy late Iron Age to early Roman Langton Down brooch dating to the period AD 25-60. The wings, spring, bow, foot and part of the pin and catch plate survive.

The wings are cylindrical in shape and composed of a folded sheet. The ends are open and there is an ovate opening dividing the wings that reveals coiled spring mechanism made of circular-sectioned copper-alloy wire with a short broken part of the pin projecting outwards.

The bow extends downwards from the front face of the wings. It is broadly triangular in cross-section with a central raised axial ridge extending down it length, giving a symmetrical appearance. The upper bow is squared against the wings with double ridge decoration.

The catch plate projects from the back of the lower bow. It is flat and triangular. The interior is perforated but small sections of surviving plate around the inside of the frame suggest that part of it might have been in-filled, leaving shaped perforations.

The brooch is 42mm long. The wings are 19.8mm long and 7mm maximum diameter. The bow is a maximum of 8.5mm wide and 4.8mm thick. The brooch weighs 6.46 grams.
