Title
Large spiral finger ring, probably Roman
Description
English: Probable Roman ring; Large, cast copper alloy ring formed from a single band of metal curled round into a loose spiral. The band has a rectangular cross section and has been somewhat flattened at the ‘bezel’ area to give a broader face. This expanded area is decorated with a border of two incised lines which follow the shape of the expansion and contraction of the face of the ring, giving a rough pointed oval shape to the decoration. The metal has a thick, grey-green patina, although the original surface is missing in many areas.

This seems likely to be a finger ring, although it is very large. It is also quite crudely made and the terminal ends seem unfinished, almost as if they have just been broken away from a longer piece, suggesting that this may have been an ad hoc creation or even a reuse of a different object.
