| Description |
Lapillus from the Pleistocene of Utah, USA. (5.8 cm across at its widest) Volcanic eruptions produce a large size range of rock fragments (tephra). The smallest grains (less than 1/8 of a millimeter) are referred to as "volcanic dust". Larger than that is "volcanic ash" (1/8 to 2 mm in size). Tephra that is between 2 and 64 mm in size is referred to as "lapilli", or "cinders". Shown above is a large, fusiform, airfall lapillus composed of scoriaceous basalt. Some plagioclase feldspar phenocrysts are present. During an eruption, a spinning blob of magma was hurled into the air and developed an elongated, twisted shape. The reddish-brown coloration is from weathering of mafic minerals (FeMg-bearing).
