Title |
Large dolphin brooch with incised decorative band |
||
Description |
English: Roman brooch of Colchester-derivative Polden Hill (folded wings, Eastern Group). Large, cast copper alloy Polden Hill type brooch dating to the later 1st century AD. Wings are broad and have a slightly-flattened, cylindrical shape. They are decorated with an incised line which has a squared zig-zag line in relief running along the centre of its length. This decorative band runs around the end of both wings and then diagonally from the inner side of the end of the wing towards the middle of the outer side of the wings, near the start of the bow. The bow is a simple, deeply curved dolphin shape which tapers gracefully to a point. It has similar decorative bands to the wings and these run along the length of both sides of the bow. There is no evidence of a foot. The catchplate and pin, which was hinged, are missing. Length 56.9mm, width 43.7mm, depth 21.7mm, weight 39.56g Ref: Hattatt, page 300, figure 159 |
