Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Lantern lighting towers are building components installed in the middle of roofs or domes to provide light to the interior. They comprise many small windows and are usually polygonal in plan. The component became fairly common in Europe after the Renaissance, and is often seen in Seljuk and early Ottoman buildings. With the improvement of construction techniques, lanterns were replaced with tabouret windows and circular light shafts in classical Ottoman architecture and were only used for a longer period in civil buildings like inns, caravansaries and houses.
