Description
English: This is a group of sixteen colossal monoliths in Chandrapur city, eastern Maharashtra. The regional legends state that these were a part of a plan to build a massive Hindu temple complex near here with the colossi a part of the artwork. However, the temple was never built. The sixteen monoliths are:
  • Two versions of Ganesha
  • Two versions of Ganga goddess
  • Two versions of Mahadeva (Shiva)
  • Two versions of Hanuman
  • One of Annapurna goddess
  • One of Kali goddess
  • One of Kurma (Vishnu)
  • One of Matsya (Vishnu)
  • One of Bhima (Mahabharata legend)
  • One of Rawana (incomplete Ramayana legend)
  • One of Nandi
  • One of Sesha
These reflect two each dedicated to Shaivism, Vishnuism, Shaktism, Hanuman, Hindu Epics, Vahanas and Rivers. The site is now midst of the city and an industrial complex.
