[edit]DescriptionLake View Cemetery, Cleveland Heights, OH - 27438973217.jpg |
English: These mausoleums and tombs are all located in Lake View Cemetery, which is split between Cleveland and the suburban municipalities of Cleveland Heights and East Cleveland. The site of more than 104,000 burials, with approximately 700 additional burials occurring each year, the population of the Cemetery exceeds the population of Cleveland Heights, University Heights, South Euclid, and East Cleveland combined, and is about 1/4th the population of the city of Cleveland itself. Covering 285 acres, the Cemetery was originally opened in 1869, and was modeled on the large “Garden” cemeteries of Victorian-era England and France. Many notable and prominent Clevelanders have been buried at the Cemetery, Some in ornate memorials or tombs. These pictures are a selection of tombs and mausoleums, which demonstrate several styles from the late 19th Century and early 20th Century, including Neoclassical, Egyptian Revival, Renaissance Revival, Gothic Revival, and Romanesque Revival. Today, the Cemetery is full of sculptural masterpieces, most made by Italian craftsmen during the time prior to World War II, and is one of the most significant historic sites in the area. |
