Description
English: On February 26, 2018, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of the dramatic scenery of South Australia.

Lake Torrens, an ephemeral salt lake, sits to the west of the dark and twisted spine of the Flinders Range. Additional salt flats and lakes dot the region. The largest salt pan sitting in the rugged red outback east of the Flinders Range is Lake Frome.

Lake Torrens stretches about 155 miles (250 km) long and 19 miles (30 km) wide in the middle of an otherwise dry desert basin. Encompassing about 2,218 sq. mi, (5,745 sq. km), Lake Torrens would be the second largest lake in Australia when filled with water. The lake has only been filled once in the past 150 years, during a major flooding event in 1989.

The lake normally is dry, but rainy season brings thunderstorms which brings a small amount of water to the lake. The flush of rain attracts a large amount of wildlife and, at times, adventuring tourists. Lake Torrens has been listed as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International. Large numbers of Banded Stilts breed in the lake area, and it is estimated to support more than 1% of the global population of the Red-capped Plover. Silver Gull and Cinnamon Quail-thrush also have made Lake Torrens home.
