[edit]
Description

c/n 1 Built 1936 Commissioned and designed by Roscoe Turner, the Meteor was a purpose built racer powered by a 1,000hp Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp. Piloted by Turner himself, it won the Thompson Trophy event at both the 1938 and 1939 National Air Races. It had come third in the 1937 event only because Turner missed a turn on the final lap when blinded by the sun, and two aircraft passed him while he circled back. Turner retired at the end of the 1939 races and the Meteor was preserved by the Turner Aeronautical Corporation, initially suspended in their main hangar at Wier Cook Airport in Indiana, but later as part of the Turner Museum. Roscoe Turner dies in 1970 In 1972, when it was donated to the Smithsonian Institute, It is seen on display at the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum. Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia
