Lady's Rock

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Lady's Rock This vicious reef stands in the middle of the main shipping lane up the Sound of Mull

In 1523, Lachlan Maclean of Duart, the eleventh chief of the Clan MacLean marooned his wife, a daughter of the second earl of Argyll, on this rock, expecting that she would be drowned by the rising tide - what nowadays would no doubt be described as "unreasonable behaviour". She was, however, saved by a fisherman, one of her clansfolk and her husband was slain by her brother four years later.

Duart Castle NM7435, ancestral home of said chief, can be seen on the shore of the Isle of Mull, to the right.
