Summary

[edit]
Description
English: In Tibetan, prayer wheels are referred to as Mani wheels. They are inscribed with mantras and tantras from Buddhist texts. Rotating these wheels is a customary practice at monasteries. While "Om Mani Padme Hum" is the most common mantra used, it is not the only one found on these wheels. Prayer wheels are believed to purify the sins of the practitioner. Constructed from wood and metal, these cylindrical wheels are fixed onto a spindle. The mantras are scripted in the Ranjana script and feature the eight auspicious symbols, or ashtamangala. The heart of the wheel is wrapped with scriptures, known as the life tree. The Buddhist prayer wheel aids in developing wisdom and compassion, advancing spiritual growth, accumulating merit, and achieving liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
