Description

Found this aggregation of larvae under a log near Pulpit Rock, Blue Mountains NP, New South Wales. The spent egg cases extend out from the log on filamentous stalks, while the larvae themselves are hunkered down below the egg case canopy, as if somehow protected? Massive mandibles for such small larvae!

I wish that I had taken a shot from the side, better showing the eggs on stalks.
