Title
La morgue: Notre Dame
Description
The morgue located at the quai of Notre-Dame opened in 1804 and exhibited the unidentified bodies of accident and homicide victims. These cadavers were literally put on display for public viewing in the hopes that they would be identified by the friends and relatives of the deceased. Because it was free and opened to the public, the morgue not only served as a site for claiming the bodies of loved ones, but also as a spectacle, a source of entertainment that catered to voyeuristic Parisians and tourists alike.
