Parte superior de la Torre de Hércules, en La Coruña, el faro en funcionamiento más antiguo del mundo, construido en el siglo II d.C., durante el dominio romano de la Península Ibérica, y usado durante mucho tiempo como torre de vigilancia además de como faro. Los dos cuerpos octogonales que coronan el cuerpo de la torre (de planta cuadrada) fueron construidos a finales del siglo XVIII, durante la remodelación de la torre iniciadada por el ingeniero militar Eustaquio Giannini por orden del rey Carlos III, y tras la demolición en 1789 del cuerpo superior original, cilíndrico y cubierto con una cúpula, que antiguamente albergaba la hoguera que servía para hacer la señal luminosa del faro. Inicialmente el segundo cuerpo octogonal construido por Giannini, más pequeño que el primero, poseía grandes ventanales para proyectar la luz del faro, con una lámpara de carbón en su interior. A comienzos de 1800 llegó a La Coruña un nuevo fanal de aceite, encargado en 1794 y construido en Londres. Su instalación obligó a nuevos cambios en la torre, completados en 1804 también bajo la dirección de Giannini: se tapiaron los ventanales del segundo cuerpo octogonal y se instaló una cúpula acristalada en lo alto de la torre, a fin de albergar la nueva linterna, ya giratoria. Durante esta reforma se construyó el caraterístico pináculo que corona la torre en su lado suroccidental. Este pináculo tiene como fin albergar una escalera de caracol que sube hasta la linterna y también servir de base para el pararrayos. <a href="http://lyncolespanol.com/2011/02/17/falta-de-puesta-a-tierra-de-la-torre-de-hercules-causo-danos-por-un-rayo/" rel="noreferrer nofollow">En febrero de 2011 la caída de un rayo en este aparato dañó la instalación eléctrica de la torre</a>, por lo que se aprobó la colocación de un nuevo pararrayos, que fue definitivamente instalado en mayo de 2012. El fanal colocado a comienzos del siglo XIX fue sustituido por otro más moderno en 1847 con lentes de Fresnel. La nueva linterna, de tercer orden -con unos 25 kilómetros de alcance- y fabricada por la casa Letourneau en París, empezó a funcional el 4 de junio de 1847. Años después se modificó esta linterna para alimentarse con parafina y petróleo. En marzo de 1927 se instaló la linterna que sigue funcionando hoy en día, fabricada también en París por la casa Barbier Bernard y Turenne, con un alcance de 24 millas náuticas y que proyecta un grupo de 4 cada 20 segundos. En 2012 la antigua linterna Letourneai del faro fue donada por la Autoridad Portuaria de La Coruña al Museo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología, donde se expone en la actualidad. |
