Le tableau de Notre-Dame représente la visite de Marie, future mère du Christ, à sa cousine Elisabeth, enceinte de Saint-Jean-Baptiste. Elle se déroule à la porte de la maison d'Elisabeth. La présence de Joseph et de l'âne, qui ne sont pas mentionnés dans le récit de l'évangéliste Luc (chap. I 39-45), ancre l'épisode de l'étreinte prophétique entre les deux femmes dans le réel et le quotidien. L'âne pris sur le vif, le baluchon et le bâton de pèlerin rappellent le voyage entrepris.
