La tombe de Caecilia Metella sur la Via Appia Antica La Via Appia Antica a été construite en 312 av J.-C., elle reliait Rome à Capoue. Par la suite, elle fut prolongée jusqu'à Brindisi. Dans Rome, elle débutait près des thermes de Caracalla. La largeur de la chaussée était de 4,1 m avec un pavement en dalles de basalte. Dans l'Antiquité, les morts étaient ensevelis hors des murs de la Cité ainsi les tombes étaient en bordure des routes. Sur les 20 premiers kilomètres de la Via Appia, on trouvait les tombeaux de familles patriciennes ainsi que plus tard les catacombes chrétiennes. Parmi ceux-ci, la tombe de Caecilia Metella (élevée entre 30 et 20 av. J.-C.) est célèbre en raison de son état de conservation et de sa forme cylindrique. Celle-ci a été transformée en forteresse au Moyen-Âge comme le montrent les créneaux qui subsistent. En 1988, le parc régional de la Via Appia a été créé afin de protéger cette zone archéologique majeure. |
