Description

De kerk is in aanbouw sinds 1882. Tijdens en na de Spaanse Burgeroorlog heeft de bouw een paar jaar stilgelegen. De huidige officiële opleverdatum is in 2026 (exact 100 jaar na de dood van Gaudi), maar velen denken dat het werk nooit voltooid zal worden. De bouw duurt inmiddels al zo lang, dat de voltooide gedeelten al zijn aangetast en gerenoveerd moeten worden.

Het idee was afkomstig van een boekhandelaar, Joseph María Bocabella. Francisco de Paula del Villar bood vervolgens aan om kosteloos plannen voor de kerk te maken. Zijn ontwerp werd totaal neogotisch. Del Villar begon in 1882 met de bouw van de crypte, maar na een jaar kreeg hij ruzie met zijn opdrachtgever en werd ontslagen. Via Juan Martorell ontving Antoni Gaudí de opdracht. Hij heeft de crypte volgens de originele ontwerpen van del Villar afgemaakt, maar hierna heeft hij zijn eigen ideeën erin uitgewerkt.
