Description
Français : Photographie de Léa, une lionne (Panthera leo) du Zoo de la Palmyre.

Le lion est un quadrupède mammifère carnivore, symbole de souveraineté, de force et de courage, c'est le deuxième plus grand félin après le tigre. Le mâle, aisément reconnaissable à son importante crinière, peut atteindre un poids de 225 kg, tandis que la femelle, plus petite, atteint généralement 150 kg. Contrairement aux autres félins, il vit en groupe.

Son espérance de vie, à l'état sauvage, est comprise entre 7 et 12 ans pour le mâle et 14 à 20 ans pour la femelle, mais il dépasse fréquemment les 30 ans en captivité. Il n'existe à l'état sauvage actuellement plus que 16 500 à 30 000 spécimens dans la savane africaine.
