Le petit panda est un mammifère principalement végétarien originaire de l'Himalaya et de la Chine méridionale. Son aire de répartition est vaste : elle couvre à l'ouest certaines parties de l'Himalaya (Népal, Bhoutan et Tibet) et, à l'est, le nord de la Birmanie et les provinces chinoises du Sichuan et du Yunnan. À l'instar des pandas géants avec lesquels ils partagent de nombreux territoires, les petits pandas mangent de grandes quantités de bambous, mais leur régime alimentaire comprend également des fruits, des racines, des glands et du lichen. Ces animaux paisibles sont d'excellents grimpeurs qui s'alimentent en grande partie dans les arbres, et passent la plupart de leur temps à manger et dormir. L'espèce est actuellement en danger, en grande partie en raison de la réduction de son habitat, mais aussi à cause d'un important braconnage. Elle figure sur la liste rouge de l'Union internationale pour la conservation de la nature (IUCN). |
