La Gruta's Grave

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: La Gruta's Grave. This World War 2 grave stone marks the site where 23 years old Flight Sergeant A.D.C. La Gruta of the Royal Australian Air Force crashed in his Boulton Paul Defiant after taking off from East Fortune airfield on 29/08/41.

Pieces of the wreckage are still lying around near the grave in this lonely spot at the head of the Earnscleuch Water in the Lammermuir Hills.

This is only one of two sites where airmen were buried on high ground in Britain, the other being near Ben More Assynt where the 6 man crew on an Anson aircraft are buried.
