Description

Eguisheim. A la f?te de saint L?on en 1881, la ch?sse fut expos?e pour la premi?re fois au public. .

The interior paintings were executed in the style of the eleventh century (but quite baroque anyway ...) and were completed in 1897. The seven medallions of the vault represent seven scenes from the life of Leo IX.

A reliquary, according to the legend, could contain a part of the skull of Saint Leon. These relics were previously exhibited at the Abbey of Lucelle, founded in 1123, which had received them from Rome. During the Revolution, the relics were transferred to the church of Bouxwiller in the Sundgau. In 1869, they were recognized as true relics. In 1880, the parish priest Andlauer d'Eguisheim obtained the authorization of the bishop of Strasbourg that part of the skull be transported to Eguisheim. At the feast of St. Leo in 1881, the shrine was exhibited for the first time to the public.
