Français : L’Ombre, Auguste Rodin, 1902, commandé par la Commission du Musée Rodin dans le courant de 1904, fondu par Eugène Rudier, acquis de l’artiste en 1905.
Le petit modèle de cette figure, répété trois fois et appelé par conséquent Les Trois ombres vient surmonter La Porte de l’Enfer (1886). Le modèle initial de L’Ombre ne possède pas de mains. Le bronze du musée des beaux-arts, exécuté par Eugène Rudier semble être l’unique épreuve fidèle au modèle original, privé de sa main droite pour souligner l’expression d’impuissance. Rodin, craignant que cette amputation ne soit mal comprise, interrogea le président de la commission des musées de Lyon à ce sujet. Ce dernier le laissa libre de réaliser la commande avec ou sans les mains, bien que cet inachèvement ait constitué une des objections opposées par la commission des musées pour l’acquisition. Ce serait après l’achat de Lyon, en 1904, que Rodin aurait fait ajouter les mains par un sculpteur tchèque, Joseph Maratka, pout éviter les interrogations du public. |
