Feuillet de diptyque en cinq parties : L'empereur triomphant (Justinien ?) dit Ivoire Barberini Constantinople première moitié du VIè siècle Ivoire, reste d'incrustations Anc. coll. Peiresc, Barberini ; acq. 1899 Musée du Louvre département des objets C'est une des plus célèbres oeuvres médiévales en ivoire. Ce feuillet de caractère profane est presque complet. Au centre l'empereur triomphant, sur un cheval qui se cabre, tient une lance. Derrière lui, se trouve un soldat vaincu (scythe ou perse). Sous les sabots du cheval, la femme qui porte des fruits symbolise la Terre. Elle touche le pied de l'empereur en signe de soumission. La partie centrale est travaillée en haut relief, certaines parties sont en ronde bosse. c'est un chef d'oeuvre qui montre le niveau de savoir faire atteint par les artisans byzantins. Le personnage sur la plaquette de gauche est un général tenant une Victoire. Il est représenté dans un palais avec un sac d'argent à ses pieds. Il a probablement participé à la campagne militaire. Un personnage du même type devait se trouver sur la plaquette symétrique qui a été perdue. La plaquette du bas représente les peuples vaincus qui apportent leurs tributs aux pieds de l'empereur. La plaquette du haut représente le Christ bénissant, entouré des symboles du Soleil et de la Lune ; il est au centre dans un médaillon porté par des anges.
