Ita, a mother of two children, is happy to finally have her own toilet built by KOTAKU, or the "City Without Slums" program, a slum improvement program from the Ministry of Public Works and Housing. A communal wastewater treatment plant for 100 households was built in in Kelurahan Krian, Kabupaten Sidoarjo. As of January 2018, she no longer needs to worry about using a public latrine-- which is challenging in bad weather and uncomfortable due to lack of privacy. “I used to go to a public toilet, but the facility would close after mid-night,” she said. USAID IUWASH PLUS works with KOTAKU to mobilize the community and capacity building to make sure that available facilities will be used and maintained. |
