An array of Frako LKT (segmented metallized polypropylene film) three-phase capacitors in an industrial installation, most likely a power factor correction unit. Manufacturer claims that segmentation improves reliability: "each segment is connected to the power supply by slender contact bridges ... when severely overloaded (several substrate punctures within one segment), they act as fuses by simply vaporizing, thereby securely isolating the damaged segment from the power supply". According to Frako, the LKT series is made exclusively at the their main factory in Teningen, Germany. The black IP20 three-phase terminal contact block (Wago Cage Clamp) is patented and made by WAGO. Each of the three cans in the foreground contains three 82.9 microfarad capacitors and built-in resistors to guarantee discharge after power-down. Capacitors are rated to carry currents up to 18A and reactive power of up to 12.5 kVAr in a 400 V, 50 Hz enviroment (proportionally more at 60 Hz, and disproportionally less at lesser voltages - the derating tables are affixed to the cans).[1] |
