Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Kohl-Arundell House, 50 University Avenue, Buffalo, New York, January 2021. Among the oldest of the handsome homes in northeast Buffalo's University Park Historic District (dating to 1911), the Kohl-Arundell House comes with Colonial Revival detailing that's restrained but elegant: the symmetrical façade is dominated on its lower half by an open porch supported by stout Doric columns; centrally placed dormers stop each elevation with overhanging eaves supported by brackets; a nifty ox-eye window on the second floor decorated with a spiderweb muntin. The moderately-pitched hipped roof exemplifies a variant of the style that was common around the time of the home's construction. The house was built for John G. Kohl (1871-1960), a meat inspector employed by the U.S. Bureau of Animal Industry who lived there for five years. Much longer-tenured was its second owner, Joseph T. Arundell (1878-1958), the founder and president of the Bison Electrical Company who resided there from 1916 until just a few months before his death.
