Description |
English: Two miles below Miles Canyon, gold seekers on the Yukon River had to navigate through White Horse Rapids. Those who could afford it hired a pilot or portaged their goods around the rapids and used ropes to guide their empty boats through the dangerous rapids. Some boats broke up among the rocks and whirlpools; some took on so much water that they sank. Numerous people were injured or lost their lives. This 1898 photo by Eric Hegg shows a boatload of gold seekers and their goods running White Horse Rapids on the Yukon River. Freight and passengers generally got soaked. Original title: Whitehorse rapids
