DescriptionKirkgate Market carvings at Merchants House 013.jpg |
Carved work by William Day Keyworth junior (1843-1902), salvaged from Kirkgate Market, Bradford in 1973 by Bradford City Council. The market was designed by Lockwood & Mawson, completed 1872, demolished 1973. In 2014 seven carved stones and an iron lamp base were rescued from storage by a local action group. They were placed on public display on the steps of Merchant's House, Peckover Street, Little Germany, Bradford, West Yorkshire. Showing part of one of the spandrils over the main entrance arch. Keyworth carved the two spandrils, and Charles Mawer was responsible for the carving on the rest of the building. This carving was placed on display on its side, so the image has been rotated to rectify this. This piece maintains its original shape as installed within the right hand spandrel over the arch, fitting between the keystone and the sculpted goddess. |
