EUSEBIO FRANCISCO KINO, S.J. 43 settlement was begun, the San Jose being sent for sup-plies and recruits and with dispatches for the viceroy.25 The routine of life at San Bruno from December 21,1683, to May 8, 1684, can be gleaned from the detaileddiary kept by Father Kino and preserved to us in theoriginal in the archives of Mexico.26 It begins with anaccount of an exploration by Father Kino and EnsignContreras into the Sierra Giganta, to the west. Theprincipal occupations at the little outpost of civilizationwere those connected with providing food, shelter, pro-tection, and the conversion of the natives. The docileIndians labored willingly in building the fort, thehouses, and the church, and brought such supplies asthe sterile land afforded. Father Kinos diary gives us a perfect picture of atrue missionary, devoted heart and soul to the one ob-ject of converting and civilizing the natives, and forwhom no task was too mean and no incident too trivialif it contributed to his main end
