Kings Staunch, River Lark

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Kings Staunch, River Lark When the River Lark was navigable (until about 1920) a series of locks and staunches enabled barges to reach as far inland as Bury St Edmunds. Staunches, such as here, were effectively single locks; boards were placed in a slot to stem the water flow after a barge had passed on its way upstream. By the time it reached the next lock or staunch (in this case, Turf Lock at Mildenhall), the water level in the section would be high enough to enable the barge to enter the lock. That was the theory, anyway. But in the summer months, when the natural river flow reduced to little more than a trickle, boats often had to wait for hours until the water level had reached the required height.
