Description

On 22 June 1911 George V and Mary of Teck were crowned King and Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. George V was the grandson of Queen Victoria, and the grandfather of the current Queen Elizabeth II. His Queen Consort, Mary of Teck, was a German princess who had originally been engaged to George’s older brother (and heir to the throne) Prince Albert. Albert died of pneumonia during their engagement in 1891, however Queen Victoria favoured Mary as a potential future queen so much that an engagement was arranged with the new Crown Prince George. The couple were crowned in Westminster Abbey and ruled until George’s death in 1936.

The year before George died, the King and Queen celebrated the silver anniversary of their reign by issuing silver medals as personal souvenirs to deserving or notable ‘Crown Services’ employees throughout the Empire. Known as the ‘King’s Silver Jubilee Medal’, it was awarded to around 1,500 New Zealand citizens. This image of the medal comes from a file from the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet - Government House, which contains information about those to whom the medal was awarded. The medal shows the King and Queen in profile, and the royal residence at Windsor on the obverse.
