The Kindred Hotel was opened on June 2, 1883. The store on the first level in the image belonged to Adolph Sternberg, who operated a clothing store in Valley City from 1882 to his death in 1908. After Sternberg's death, the store was passed along to his cousin, M.G. Straus whose clothing store became a longtime fixture in Valley City.
