| Description | I noticed this cross in Killingbeck cemetery off York Road and it says it is from the first St Patrick's Church on York Road roughly where Haslewood Green is now next door to Paws for Thought on York Road. The first St Patrick's Chapel was built in 1831 at a cost of £2,500, and its graveyard like many others across the country had become overcrowded. This meant that Roman Catholic families in the area had to inter their dead in Beckett Street Cemetery. However, in 1895 the Catholic Burial Board established the sectarian ground at Killingbeck and it was consecrated on the 14th July of that year. The writing at the base of the cross reads: This cross from the Gable of old St Patrick's Church is placed here in memory of all the deceased Priests who laboured in this Parish between 1831 to 1922. Whose names are inscribed on this stone. Old St Patrick’s. 1831. New St Patrick’s. 1891. |
