now. After the great buildinghad been finished, however, there was a disa-greement between the members of the society,the association disbanded, and the whole projectof the institution was abandoned. The propertyremained in the hands of a number of Parseetrustees, who decided to rent the place until theassociation should be reorganized and the finalproper use of the building decided upon. AUefforts to rent this immense building, however,proved futile; it being far too large a structurefor the purpose of a private residence, and eachseparate room being too large for any privatefamily use. Thus it happened that this greatbuilding, though erected several years before, hadnever been used, except for a very short time,during which a Parsee family occupied it tem-porarily ; and it was, therefore, practically new. KHETWADI CASTLE 101 ordinary drawing-room furniture; in another,sixteen single hospital beds, with as many chairsand small tables, were easily arranged. And yetanother room was sufficiently large to serve as alecture, class. Sabbath school or prayer meetingroom. As a matter of fact, any one of thetwenty-two large rooms in the castle, with twoexceptions, was sufficiently large for any suchpurpose. Indeed, the room which we utiHzedas a lecture room, was one of the smaller roomsof the castle. In addition to these twenty-twolarge apartments, there were, in the castle, fif-teen bath rooms; besides, in the back yard werethe servants quarters, the carriage house andthe stable. In the castle there was one room which, butfor its size, seemed like a penitentiary cell. Itstwo great windows, reaching from the floor towithin a short distance of the lofty ceiling, hadheavy iron bars extending across them at shortintervals, thus rendering the room as secure asany prison ceU could be.
