Summary
[edit]DescriptionKhafre's Pyramid at Giza (2427492641).jpg | The Pyramid of Khafre at Giza (also called the Second Pyramid, and Pyramid of Chefren) is the second largest of the three main pyramids in the Giza Necropolis bordering what is now Cairo, Egypt, and survives substantially intact. It is believed the pyramid was built as a tomb for Fourth dynasty Egyptian King Khafre (Chefren in Greek) and constructed around 2570 BC. Originally it was covered by casing stones that formed a smooth outer surface, and what is seen today is the underlying core structure. Some of the casing stones can still be seen around the base and summit. There have been varying scientific and alternative theories regarding the pyramid's construction techniques. Most accepted construction theories are based on the idea that it was built by moving huge stones from a quarry and dragging and lifting them into place. It is often mistaken for the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops). |
