Summary
[edit]DescriptionKey Hill Cemetery, Jewellery Quarter - geograph.org.uk - 1291026.jpg |
English: Key Hill Cemetery, Jewellery Quarter. Laid out by the General Cemetery Company and opened in 1836 to relieve overcrowding of churchyards.
See also 961913 and http://www.friendsofkeyhillcemetery.co.uk/ Like the later Warstone Lane Cemetery nearby in SP0587 it was financed and facilitated by sand quarrying. In the distance is the rebuilt retaining wall on the boundary with the Metro. Joseph Chamberlain, Radical, is buried here, as is Alfred Bird, chemist. I was humbled to learn that he invented custard (which is based on cornflour) because his wife had a food intolerance to eggs. |
