Summary
[edit]DescriptionKells Priory - geograph.org.uk - 1391813.jpg |
English: Kells Priory The remains of the Augustinian priory lie beside the King's river south of the medieval city of Kilkenny. Its most striking feature is the series of defensive tower houses spaced at intervals along the entire length of its walls. It was founded in 1193 by Geoffrey FitzRobert brother-in-law to Strongbow, and during these early years of its existence, it was attacked and burned on no less than three occasions. These events may have precipitated the building of the walled fortifications. The priory was subject to the Dissolution in March 1540, when it was forfeited to James Butler, 9th Duke of Ormonde. |
