Description

Tegelijk met de bouw van de Afsluitdijk werden er tussen 1932 en 1933 aan de Friese kant 17 kazematten met 3m dikke muren gebouwd ter bescherming van de Vesting Holland en de spuisluizen op Kornwerderzand en Den Oever. Als vaste bewapening waren er vier kanonnen van 5 cm en 21 M’08 Schwarzlose mitrailleurs. Toen de Duitsers in mei 1940 in grote getale richting Afsluitdijk oprukten, kwamen ze mede dankzij de ondersteuning van de kanonneerboot Hr. Ms. Johan Maurits van Nassau niet voorbij de kazematten bij Kornwerderzand. Ook de Luftwaffe was niet in staat de onverwacht felle tegenstand uit te schakelen. Het complex bleek een onneembare vesting.
